Speaking with Students at the Community Academy of Science and Health

Recently, at the Community Academy of Science and Health, I had the opportunity to speak to about 100 Haitian American students.  I talked about US policy toward Haiti and the increased amount of attention the Obama administration is paying toward Haiti.

I also shared with them some of my personal experience as a first generation immigrant, explained how I got into public service and some of the work I do now. They were especially interested in the National Haitian American Elected Officials Network, a new organization I am involved in, which seeks to improve relations between the US and Haiti. At our first conference in DC last month, I, along with Haitian elected officials from across the country, came together to discuss priorities. It was a start to a conversation we will continue over the coming years. Someday I hope some of the students in the audience will join me in the Network.

Many of the students hope to become lawyers and diplomats and follow various careers in public service, and I was honored to share a bit of my story with them. Great to see so many young people engaged!
