List Includes Support Resources for Starting, Building Small Businesses

In the midst of National Small Business Week, State Representative Linda Dorcena Forry of Boston has assembled a list of ten useful resources to support the growth and development of small businesses in Massachusetts.  In 1963, National Small Business Week was established to recognize the contributions made to the American economy by the estimated 27.2 million small businesses operating in the United States. 

 Rep. Forry, who chairs the Massachusetts Legislature’s Joint Committee on Community Development and Small Businesses, is taking this year’s official Small Business Week (May 16-20) as an opportunity to highlight programs, offices and organizations throughout the Commonwealth who work to support entrepreneurs and small business owners.  “Small businesses are the lifeblood of the national economy, and it is no different here in Massachusetts,” said Rep. Forry.  “Many of our most innovative citizens make their contributions to society and their local communities through the development of small businesses. Small businesses are the incubators of big ideas and the employer of hundreds of thousands of residents.  They are a crucial component of the Massachusetts economy.”

According to figures provided by the Massachusetts Office of Small Business and Entrepreneurship (OSBE), small businesses constitute 85% of all companies doing business in Massachusetts and employ more than a quarter of the state’s workforce.  There are nearly 127,000 small firms with fewer than 19 employees that conduct business in Massachusetts.

 “As I travel the state speaking with small business owners about the challenges they face, time and again I am told that they are simply unaware of the resources available to support and assist them.  This list is but a snapshot of the types of public support that exists for small businesses in Massachusetts.  I hope it can serve as a guide for anyone seeking to start or grow a business in Boston and beyond,” Rep. Forry said.

OSBE acts as the central resource for small businesses in Massachusetts, providing information and referrals on all programs and funding available statewide.

The Massachusetts Small Business Development Center Network provides business advising and access to capital for small businesses throughout the state.

3.  United States Small Business Administration

The SBA offers technical assistance and educational programs to aid and inform small businesses throughout the country and the state.

4.  SCORE

SCORE is a non-profit association dedicated to educating entrepreneurs and helping small businesses start, grow, and succeed. SCORE is a resource partner with the U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA).

5.  Massachusetts Growth Capital Corporation

MGCC provides a centralized resource at the state level that offers working capital, loan guarantees, and targeted technical assistance to solve specific financial and operational problems for small businesses. 

6.  Massachusetts Supplier Diversity Office (formerly known as SOMWBA)

The SDO specializes in assisting minority- and women- owned businesses. In conjunction with the State, the SDO spends more than $240 million a year doing business with certified minority- and women- owned businesses.
